This course is taught at an awareness level with the target audience being municipal workers, supervisors, managers, safety officers, human resources, and personnel who may, after receiving additional training, become members of a confined space rescue team. Topics reviewed include e definitions; developing a written permit-required confined space (PRCS) program; the roles and responsibilities for the Supervisor, Authorized Entrant, and Attendant; the confined space permit; air monitoring; confined space equipment including a multi-gas meter, tripod, winch, self-retracting lifeline, and full-body harness; identifying PRCS in your municipality; hazards and controls of the PRCS and of the work to be performed in the PRCS; Lockout/tagout; and rescue requirements. Resources and links to the MA Department of Labor Standards (DLS), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and ANSI/ASSP resources will be included in course materials available to the students. Students will participate in small group activities, problem solve and learn by sharing information and knowledge. (For in-person training, equipment including personal protective equipment, a multi-gas meter, tripod, winch, and self-retracting lifeline, and full body harnesses will be present. Students will have the opportunity for hands-on learning using this equipment.)

Photographs of confined spaces, videos, and mock setups of permit spaces may be used in problem-solving activities to supplement and reinforce the learning. PLEASE NOTE - Most municipal emergency response departments (fire, police, etc.) are not trained or equipped to safely perform confined space rescue. MIIA also offers a half-day course titled "Confined Space Rescue Awareness." MIIA is able to issue TCH credits for this course for the renewal of a MA DEP Wastewater license. 1 training hour = 1 TCH. This webinar qualifies the MIIA member for .5% credit under the FY22 MIIA Rewards Program under the Workers Compensation Category
