This presentation focuses on the foundational research about lithium-ion batteries, thermal runaway and
how fire and explosion hazards can develop. The knowledge you gain will help you identify the risks

Presenter: Adam Barowy, UL Fire Safety Research Institute
Adam Barowy is a research engineer within the UL Fire Safety Research Institute in Columbia, MD and
has 19 years’ experience in fire safety including fire fighter safety research, fire incident reconstruction,
product fire safety evaluation, large-scale fire testing, and volunteer firefighting. Adam holds a bachelor’s
degree in mechanical engineering from UMass Amherst and master’s degree in fire protection
engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Adam is currently researching fire and explosion
hazards from li-ion batteries.
